The double line branch from the right to the junction, served as interchange from the high level, Vale of Neath lines east of the High Level station. The Vale of Neath line from here to Aberdare High Level and onwards is obscured by the embankment on the right but passes over the Merthyr line by way of the rail overbridge, seen in black above the wagons in the sidings Station footbridge, Quakers' Yard, Low Level station 17 76 East

SIR Nine Mile Point & Tredegar (LMS Line) View of out-of-use siding behind Bird-in-Hand West signal box showing the inclined LMS lines to Tredegar climbing to Pontllanfraith High level station and the Tredegar line. Note the LMS upper-quadrant semaphore post devoid of arms. A double line junction on the Vale of Neath line was located at the other side of the signal box and previously gave a 22-chain direct link to the inclined LMS lines. bpm00228 shows the junction start and was known as Bird-in-Hand junction. The double line junction allowed interchange of VON traffic with the LMS line to Tredegar, Nantybwch and thence the MTA line. Notice the check rail in the trailing points has a "check lump" installed. A housing estate now stands on this site Bird-in-hand West junction, Pontllanfraith 9 19½ North

SIR Nine Mile Point & Tredegar (LMS Line) Level crossing & LNWR signal box. The skew rail overbridge passed over the Vale of Neath line. Note the tall lower-quadrant L&NWR semaphore signal protecting the level crossing. This was high so that trainmen ascending the gradient from Wyllie to Pontllanfraith High Level, could get an early view of the signal above the roof line of the house on the right. Apart from the house, none of the railway items now survive (2001) Pontllanfraith High Level station 11 09½ NE
